There are some anime voices that feel so permanent you almost forget there’s a real person behind them.
For a lot of fans, that was Wakana Yamazaki as Ran Mori in Detective Conan.
That’s part of why the news of Wakana Yamazaki’s death has hit anime communities so hard online. Fans aren’t just mourning a voice actor. They’re mourning a character voice that had quietly been part of their lives for nearly three decades.
The news came only a couple months after Yamazaki stepped away from voice acting due to health issues. Back in February 2026, many fans were still hoping she would eventually return to the role. Instead, anime fans are now processing the fact that one of Detective Conan’s most recognizable voices is suddenly gone forever.
Wakana Yamazaki helped define Ran Mori for an entire generation of anime fans
According to Aoni Production, Wakana Yamazaki passed away on April 18, 2026, at the age of 61 after receiving treatment for an illness. A private funeral service was already held for close family members.
Yamazaki voiced Ran Mori from the very beginning of the Detective Conan anime in 1996 all the way through 2026. That means fans heard her voice as the character for nearly 30 years.
That kind of longevity is rare in anime.
For many viewers, Ran’s voice became part of the emotional comfort of the series itself. Detective Conan has been running for so long that fans grew up with these characters. Some people watched the anime as kids and are now adults with families of their own. Through all of that time, Yamazaki’s performance stayed consistent.
The official Detective Conan account shared a statement thanking Yamazaki for her “tremendous dedication and long-standing contributions” to the franchise.
Series creator Gosho Aoyama also shared a message that many fans found especially emotional:
“To think I’ll never hear that gentle, comforting voice again — the one that was always right there naturally…it makes me so sad.”
Honestly, that quote captures exactly why this news feels different to longtime anime fans. Some voices become part of the background of your life without you even realizing it.
Anime fans probably heard Wakana Yamazaki in more series than they realized
While Detective Conan was easily her most iconic role, Yamazaki’s career stretched across decades of anime and gaming history.
She voiced Ayane in Dead or Alive, appeared in One Piece as both Nojiko and a temporary replacement voice for Nami, and also had roles in series like Sailor Moon, InuYasha, Trigun, Digimon Adventure 02, and Yu-Gi-Oh!
That’s part of what has made reactions online feel so emotional.
Fans keep realizing they’ve been hearing Wakana Yamazaki’s voice across multiple generations of anime without even thinking about it. One minute people are talking about Ran Mori clips, and the next they’re remembering old Sailor Moon episodes or discovering she played Ayane in Dead or Alive for years.
It turns into one of those strange moments where anime history suddenly feels very real.
Following Yamazaki’s earlier hiatus, Akemi Okamura had temporarily stepped in as Ran Mori. The Detective Conan production team has now confirmed Okamura will continue voicing the character moving forward.
But for many fans, Wakana Yamazaki’s voice will always be tied to Ran herself.
And after nearly 30 years with the franchise, it’s hard to imagine Detective Conan without her.
