‘Jimoto Saiko’ Anime Revealed as Netflix Exclusive During MAPPA Event

A Jimoto Saiko anime adaptation was revealed during the MAPPA 15th Anniversary Lineup Reveal may have just become one of anime fans’ biggest “wait, what did I just watch?” moments of the year. MAPPA announced that usagi’s viral manga Jimoto Saiko! is getting an anime adaptation that will stream exclusively on Netflix.

Alongside the announcement, fans received a teaser trailer, a teaser visual, and the first staff details for the upcoming series. Judging by early reactions, many viewers were not prepared for the series’ unique blend of adorable visuals and absolute chaos.

Jimoto Saiko Anime Revealed With Teaser Trailer and Visual

Originally serialized on social media, usagi’s Jimoto Saiko! later received a print release from Saizusha, which has published eight volumes to date. Netflix describes the series as a “sparkling outlaw manga” known for combining an adorable art style with a world that often descends into complete mayhem.

The newly released teaser trailer introduces Chanel-chan and her friends as they navigate life in the hometown they proudly insist is “the absolute best” — regardless of whatever bizarre events unfold around them.

The trailer also features “milk,” the 2009 single by singer-songwriter aiko, who is a longtime fan of the original manga. According to Netflix, aiko said she was thrilled to hear the song used in the teaser and described Jimoto Saiko! as “the cutest yet most terrifying world ever.”

The anime’s official synopsis describes the story as:

“A grand spectacle anime where girls who have never stepped foot outside their hometown continue to say ‘Jimoto Saiko!’ (‘My hometown is the best!’) no matter what misfortunes they encounter.”

Creator usagi Shares Emotional Message

Following the announcement, creator usagi shared an emotional statement celebrating the adaptation.

The mangaka revealed that Jimoto Saiko! originally began as a self-published project that they started posting online on a whim. During serialization, usagi faced serious financial difficulties and credited both their editor and those around them for helping them continue the series.

While the creator initially began drawing manga simply to make a living, usagi explained that they now continue the series with “a certain hope” in mind and look forward to eventually bringing the story to its conclusion.

Stories like this are always a little extra special. Seeing an independently created manga grow into a full anime adaptation by MAPPA feels like the kind of underdog success story anime fans love to see.

Fans Are Already Calling the Series “Unhinged”

Although many viewers initially expected a straightforward cute-girls slice-of-life series, the teaser quickly changed those expectations.

Online reactions have focused heavily on the contrast between the series’ colorful visuals and the darker elements shown in the trailer, including crime, violence, and references to drugs. Several fans compared the tone to Akiba Maid War, while others jokingly described the series as “Cute Girls Doing Cocaine Things.”

Manga readers have also cautioned newcomers that despite its comedic presentation, Jimoto Saiko! can be surprisingly bleak at times. Even so, the overwhelming response appears to be curiosity, with many fans admitting they had never heard of the manga before the announcement but are now eager to see just how chaotic this “sparkling outlaw” story becomes.

Honestly, any series capable of making viewers say, “What on earth did I just watch?” within a two-minute teaser already has my attention. My anime watchlist certainly did not need another addition, but here we are.
