What Is The Ogre’s Bride About?
Also known by its Japanese title, Oni no Hanayome (鬼の花嫁), The Ogre’s Bride is a romantic fantasy series written by Kureha and illustrated by Yū Shiroya.
Set in a world where humans and ayakashi coexist peacefully, the story follows Yuzu, a high school girl who has spent much of her life overshadowed by her older sister, who was chosen as the bride of a demon fox. Neglected by her family and burdened by constant comparisons, Yuzu’s life changes dramatically when she encounters an extraordinarily handsome ogre who declares that she is his bride.
Crunchyroll describes the series:
“The ayakashi and humans coexist in harmony. The ayakashi, having superior abilities and beautiful appearances, sometimes find their partner among human women, making them their ‘bride’. The bride, in exchange for bringing prosperity, receives absolute love from the ayakashi.
Yuzu is constantly compared to her sister, a bride of a demon fox, and is resented by her family every day. One day, when Yuzu just couldn’t take things anymore, a man appeared before her on a bridge. This man is the most beautiful man Yuzu has ever seen… and he’s calling her his wife?! The most powerful, ‘cold-hearted’ ayakashi is pouring his heart out for Yuzu?!”
The series has gained popularity for its Cinderella-inspired romance, blending Japanese folklore with themes of self-worth, healing, and unconditional love. Readers who enjoyed series like My Happy Marriage, Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, or The Ancient Magus’ Bride may find The Ogre’s Bride equally appealing.
From Web Novel to Anime Adaptation
The Ogre’s Bride originally began as a web novel on Novema in 2019 before being published by Starts Publishing under its Starts Publishing Bunko imprint.
The franchise later expanded into a manga adaptation illustrated by Jun Togashi, which is serialized in noicomi. English-speaking fans can read the manga through MangaPlaza.
The series’ growing popularity has also led to multiple adaptations. In addition to the upcoming television anime, The Ogre’s Bride received a live-action film adaptation that premiered in March 2026.

Why Romance Anime Fans Should Pay Attention
Supernatural romance anime continue to resonate with audiences, particularly stories centered around heroines discovering their own value through supportive relationships. The Ogre’s Bride appears ready to deliver another emotionally satisfying romance with a folklore-inspired twist.
Between the ayakashi setting, the devoted ogre love interest, and Yuzu’s journey toward finding happiness beyond her family’s expectations, the series has all the ingredients that have made similar romantic fantasy titles fan favorites.
And honestly, anime continues to set incredibly unrealistic standards for fictional husbands. Apparently, being an ancient, powerful supernatural being with unwavering devotion is simply the baseline now.
With its July premiere quickly approaching, romance fans won’t have to wait much longer to see whether The Ogre’s Bride becomes one of Summer 2026’s standout series.
